Yarbrough Earns Defensive POW Honors

Leesburg, Fla. – The Lake-Sumter State College volleyball team is coming off a solid victory over NJCAA DI affiliate, Eastern Florida State which helped garner Hannah Yarbrough Player of the Week status.

After a tough in-conference loss to St. John's River State College Wednesday night in four sets, LSSC bounced back over the weekend. Eastern Florida came into the match with a 7-9 record having played some of the top teams in the country already this season.

Lake-Sumter dropped the first set, 25-22, before coming back to dominate in the second set, 25-13. The Titans took control of the match with a pivotal third set victory, 25-22. With their backs against the wall, the Lakehawks showed out in the fourth set, 25-14, to force a deciding fifth set.

Set number five was a hard fought battle from start to finish. A couple key kills down the stretch gave Lake-Sumter the advantage and the eventual win, 15-12. Aleisha Marcano led the way in scoring with a career high 17 kills. Kelsie Savage looked like John Stockton on the court dishing out 28 assists on the night. Ember Oglesby finished the match hitting .571 with eight points and three blocks.

Yarbrough has been the definition of consistency this season for the Lakehawks. The freshman has only recorded less than 12 digs in one match on the year. Saturday, the Eustis native set a new career mark with 29 digs while adding two assists and one kill. In addition to her 27 dig performance against St. John's, Yarbrough was named DII Region 8 Defensive Player of the Week.

Lake-Sumter (3-8, 2-4) will be back in action Wednesday on the Leesburg campus taking on South Florida State (7-5, 4-3). In the first matchup between these two teams, the Panthers knocked off the Lakehawks in four sets. Game time is set for 6 pm.
