Lakehawk Softball’s Jay Miller Coaches Final Season
LEESBURG, Fla. (Softball) – Lake-Sumter State College's (LSSC) Jay Miller has wrapped up his final season as the head coach of the softball team. In 11 years leading the program, Miller finished with a 314-292 record.
From finishing his first season with a 13-46 record in 2016, Miller achieved the program's first 30-win season in 2018 and the program's first 40-win season in 2023.
During his time at Lake-Sumter, Miller had one NJCAA All-American, one NFCA Gold Glove recipient, two FCSAA Players of the Year, eight NJCAA All-Academic Team awards, and 40+ NJCAA All-Academic honorees as well as helping over 40 student-athletes continue playing at four-year institutions.
One highlight of Miller's career at LSSC is the historic 2023 season where he led the team to their first Sun-Lakes Conference Title and an FCSAA Championship. He was also named Coach of the Year.
The team had a 43-19 record and a runner-up finish at the 2023 South Atlantic District Championship. They also set several new records including hits (522), home runs (53), runs scored (358), RBIs (317), and stolen bases (181).
Coach Miller reflected on his time as the head softball coach, "The purpose when you go anywhere and do anything is to leave it better than you found it. I think we were able to accomplish that here with the softball program these past 11 seasons."
"In the middle of this final season, I was seeing coaches, umpires, and administrators coming and talking to me about my career and it became obvious – it was all about the journey and the people you meet along the way. The incredible people I have met have impacted me and who I am today, and I am so incredibly thankful for what this program gave me."
"Winnie the Pooh has this amazing quote where he says, 'how lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard?' and I do not think I could have said it better than that. For everyone who believed in me and believed in what this program stood for, thank you so much."
Coach Miller was named the Director of Athletics in addition to his job as head coach last year. He will now transition away from coaching into his new administrative role.
Lakehawk Athletics will announce the program's new coach on Thursday, May 21, 2026 at 5:00 p.m.
