LEESBURG, Fla. (Softball) – Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) Softball opened Sun-Lakes Conference play over the weekend against Florida State College at Jacksonville. The Manta Rays swept the Lakehawks all three games.
Game 1 – FSCJ 4, LSSC 2
The Manta Rays took a close game one over the Lakehawks.
Lake-Sumter took the lead 1-0 in the bottom of the first after Emmy Lee reached on a two-base error by the Manta Ray outfield. She scored on a single up the middle from Mittie O'Brien.
The Lakehawks extended their lead in the third with a leadoff walk from Jamie Hegedus. Hegedus advanced to second and took third on a bunt just in time for Lee to come up with a base hit to score the Lakehawks' second run.
FSCJ closed the gap to one run with a solo homerun in the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth, a pair of back-to-back doubles from Emma Christensen and Baylie Goodwin extended the Lakehawk lead 3-1.
Another solo homerun in the top of the fifth brought from FSCJ made the score 3-2. The Manta Rays tied the board at 3-3 in the top of the sixth before taking a one-run lead in the seventh to secure the win.
Sydney Klein tossed a complete game but recorded the loss moving to 7-3 on the mound.
Game 2 – FSCJ 12, LSSC 4
The Manta Ray bats came alive in game two outhitting the Lakehawks 13-6.
Goodwin went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Chirstensen went 1-for-1 with an RBI and a walk.
Kendal Rumer took the game two loss with 1.0 inning pitched. She allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits.
Game 3 – FSCJ 9, LSSC 4
Lake-Sumter fell to the Manta Rays in game three on Saturday after giving up five unearned runs in the third inning.
Lee went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. O'Brien went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Lee was the starting pitcher and recorded the loss with 2.2 innings pitched.
The Lakehawks move to a 15-6 record, 0-3 in conference play. The Manta Rays improve to 11-12, 3-0 in conference play.
Lake-Sumter will continue Sun-Lakes Conference action on Friday, Feb. 27 against St. Johns River State College. Game one will be played at Mike Matulia Field at 2:00 p.m. and on Saturday, the teams will play a double header in Palatka.
