LEESBURG, Fla. (Softball) – Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) softball hosted Gordon State College for a pair of double headers on Friday and Saturday. The Lakehawks swept the Highlanders for four straight games including two mercy rule wins.
Game 1 – Gordon State 6, Lake-Sumter 14 (5 innings)
Gordon State took an early 4-0 lead in the first before the Lakehawks scored seven taking the lead back. Lake-Sumter added seven more runs to the board in the following innings to end the game in five by mercy rule.
Emmy Lee went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Mittie O'Brien went 2-for-2 with five RBIs and one run scored.
Sydney Klein got the win with 4.0 innings pitched improving to a 2-1 record on the mound so far this season.
Game 2 – Gordon State 4, Lake-Sumter 5 (8 innings)
The Highlanders took a 1-0 lead to start game two. In the bottom of the first, a base hit by Zee Brown scored Maya Hegedus and Malayla Miller to take the lead 2-1.
Gordon State scored three in the sixth taking the lead back 4-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Sarah Torres led off with a double. Brooke Chatham entered the game to pinch run for Torres and advanced to third on a bunt from Maya Hegedus.
Smart baserunning by Chatham and Hegedus in a first and third situation forced a Highlander error allowing Chatham to score and Hegedus to advance to third.
The Lakehawks tied up the game after a bunt from Jamie Hegedus allowed M. Hegedus to score easily forcing the game into extra innings.
The teams agreed to a "Texas Tie Breaker" in the eighth inning which placed a runner on second base to start the inning.
Lake-Sumter was able to hold the Highlander runner at third, giving the Lakehawks a huge advantage going into the bottom of the eighth.
With Hennessey Rodriguez on second, Mackenzie Eland advanced her to third on an opposite field ground ball. Then, O'Brien stepped up with a base hit to walk off game two of four against Gordon State.
Kendall Rumer recorded the win in game two with two shutout innings pitched.
Game 3 – Gordon State 2, Lake-Sumter 10 (6 innings)
Back at Mike Matulia Field on Saturday, Gordon State took the lead in the top of the first once again, but it did not hold over the Lakehawks.
Lake-Sumter took the lead in the bottom of the first after a pair of leadoff walks from J. Hegedus and Lee. Base hits from Emma Christensen and Kennedy Howard scored three runs.
In the bottom of the second, with two on base, Lee hit a double to score Eland and Miller. A sacrifice fly from O'Brien scored Lee to extend the Lakehawk lead 5-2.
Back-to-back hits in the fifth from Christensen and Howard scored Christensen for a 6-2 lead.
Eland led off the bottom of the sixth with a single followed by a walk from J. Hegedus. Base hits from Lee, O'Brien, and Howard scored three runs giving the Lakehawks a 10-2 mercy rule win.
Starting pitcher O'Brien recorded her first career win on the mound with 4.0 innings pitched. Kaylin Smith got the save with two perfect innings pitched.
Game 4 – Gordon State 9, Lake-Sumter 14
The Highlanders jumped ahead 7-0 in the top of the first. The Lakehawks scored five in the first and six in the second taking the lead 11-7.
A two-run homerun from Gordon State in the fourth brought the Highlanders within two of the Lakehawks.
M. Hegedus and Baylie Goodwin led of the sixth with a pair of singles. Jaden Russo stepped up to the plate with a triple to score both.
Eland solidified the lead with a single to score Russo extending the lead 14-9 for the four-game sweep over Gordon State.
Rumer recorded her second win with 4.0 innings pitched. Klein picked up the saved after allowed just one hit on no runs for the final three innings.
Lake-Sumter softball will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 3 against Seminole State at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. Watch the games live online here.
