LEESBURG, Fl (Softball) – Combining for a total of 27 runs on 27 hits in two games, the Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC), softball team dominated the scoreboard against Hillsborough College (HC) to open the 2026 season.
Game 1 – Lake-Sumter 14, Hillsborough 4 (5 innings)
Lake-Sumter took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first after an RBI double from Zee Brown followed by a three-run homerun by Mittie O'Brien off the top of the left field foul pole.
A pair of back-to-back doubles from Kennedy Howard and Emma Christensen in the bottom of the second scored one before Brown launched a two-run homer in her second at bat of the game.
The Hawks scored two in the third, still trailing the Lakehawks 8-2. Christensen led off with a solo shot followed by a pair of hits from Brown and O'Brien extending the Lakehawk lead 10-2.
The Lakehawks secured their lead with four more runs in the fourth for a 10-run lead over the Hawks.
Sydney Klein registered the complete-game win, her first of the season.
Game 2 – Lake-Sumter 13, Hillsborough 5 (5 innings)
The Lakehawks took an early 2-0 lead in game two with a couple of base hits in the bottom of the first.
Malayla Miller led off the second inning with a walk before stealing second and third and scoring easily on a bunt from Jayden Russo. Russo followed Miller's lead, stealing both second and third and ultimately scoring and extending the Lakehawk lead 4-0.
The Lakehawks added eight runs to the board, now leading the Hawks 13-2 in the fourth.
In Hillsborough's final at bat, they put three up, but were unable to cut more off the lead. The Lakehawks closed out the fifth inning to record their second run-rule victory of the day.
Emmy Lee snagged her first-career win on the mound with 4.0 innings pitched.
Lake-Sumter improves to a 2-0 start on the year. The Lakehawks hit the road on Saturday, Jan. 24 for a double header at Seminole State College.
