Lakehawk Baseball Drops Road Game at Santa Fe
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Baseball) – The Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) baseball team traveled to Santa Fe College on Tuesday for final game leading up to Sun-Lakes Conference play. The Lakehawks lost a back-and-forth battle to the Saints 9-7.
Lake-Sumter took the lead in the top of the first after a pair of singles from Thomas Velardi and Brady Byers. A sac fly from Hayden Harrison scored Velardi giving the Lakehawks a 1-0 lead.
The Saints took the lead back in the bottom half of the frame 2-0. Then added two more in the second for a 4-1 lead.
Bruno Vazquez scored on his own in the third after a leadoff triple. He then took home on a wild pitch.
Vazquez led off the top of the fifth with a single followed by Velardi. A sac bunt from Brady Byers moved the Lakehawk base runners into scoring position just in time for Vazquez to score his second run of the game on another wild pitch.
The Saints added another run to the board in the bottom of the fifth, extending their lead 5-3.
Velardi led the top of the seventh with a solo homerun.
Within one run of Santa Fe, Harrison reached on a single. Then, a double from Alex Galan scored Harrison to tie up the score at 5-5.
Santa Fe put four on the board in the bottom of the seventh, not allowing the Lakehawks any chance at taking a lead.
In their final at bat, Cam Carpenter reached the bases after a hit-by-pitch. Singles from Galan and Mason Blackburn allowed Carpenter to advance around the bases and score.
An infield error from the Saints allowed Galan to score unearned, but the Lakehawk rally was stifled at two runs.
Santa Fe defeated Lake-Sumter for the second time this season. Lake-Sumter moves to 8-7 on the season ahead of a five-game week.
The Lakehawks will be back at home on Monday, Feb. 16 at 2:00 p.m. against CCBC Catonsville. The livestream can be accessed here.
