LEESBURG, Fla. (Baseball) – Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) baseball continued Sun-Lakes Conference play over the weekend with No. 22 South Florida State College (SFSC). The Lakehawks took one of three from the Panthers in the series.
For the season, Lake-Sumter won two of six matchups against SFSC.
Game One –LSSC 9, SFSC 8
Trailing 2-0, the Lakehawks had a huge six-run inning to take the lead 6-2 in the top of the fifth. The Panthers answered back with six runs in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead back 8-2.
In the top of the sixth, Ryan Villaman and Ean Gimson led off with a pair of singles. An overthrow from the pitcher on a sacrifice bunt from Eli Thurmond allowed Villaman and Gimson to score, tying the game at 8-8.
With Thurmond on third, an infield single from Camden Williamson gave the Lakehawks a 9-3 lead for the win in game one.
Williamson went 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Andrew Merchant went 3-for-5 with one RBI.
Thurmond, Villaman, Gimson each scored two runs.
Starting pitcher Bryan Burtoft took the no decision for game one with 4.1 innings pitched.
Corey Peters recorded the win on the mound with 2.2 innings pitched improving to 2-0 on the season. He allowed just one run, unearned, on two hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Elliot Sande recorded his fifth save of the season with 2.0 innings pitched.
Game Two – SFSC 10, LSSC 3
South Florida State came out with a six-run lead from the top of the first. They added one in the second and three more in the fourth inning for a 10-0 lead.
The Lakehawks added one run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh, but were unable to overcome the first inning charge from the Panthers.
Merchant went 3-for-2 with one RBI and two runs scored. Joelvis Fernandez Angeles went 2-for-2 with a walk.
Jack Johnson recorded the loss after pitching the first inning moving to 5-5 on the season.
Game Three – SFSC 11, LSSC 5
South Florida State secured the series in game three with an 11-5 win over Lake-Sumter.
Gimson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Williamson went 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Starting pitcher Fabian Romero recorded the loss for game three with 5.0 innings pitched moving to 5-3 on the season. He allowed three runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
South Florida State improved to 31-19 with a 15-12 record in conference play. With two wins over the Lakehawks, the Panthers clinched a spot in the 2025 Region 8 Championship in May.
With two losses in the series, the Lakehawks move to 27-22 overall with a 12-15 record in conference play. Lake-Sumter remains in fourth in conference standing.
The Lakehawks will be on the road next weekend for their final Sun-Lakes Conference series at Palm Beach State College. The fourth and final spot in the Region 8 Championship will come down to the series between Lake-Sumter and Palm Beach State.
