Fyffe Named NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Track & Field) – The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has named freshman Mark Fyffe the NJCAA Track & Field Men's Outdoor Athlete of the Week for his performance in the Long Jump and 100m events at the Embry-Riddle Running Elements Classic last weekend.
Kicking off the weekend of competition with the Long Jump, Fyffe's mark of 7.50m clinched a first-place finish in the event, ranks second nationally, and set new school record that he had already previously broken. Additionally, his performance in the Long Jump cleared the NJCAA qualification standard making him the first Lakehawk in program history to qualify for the outdoor national championships in May.
Fyffe's second event of the weekend was in the 100m. His time of 10.95 was good for a new school record in the event and, like the Long Jump, a record he had previously set earlier this season.
Fyffe becomes the third Lakehawk Track & Field athlete, the first for outdoor track & field, to be recognized by the NJCAA. Earlier this year, teammate Jaden Miller was named Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week for her performance in the Long Jump, Triple Jump, and 60m events.
"Mark's performance is a reflection of his relentless work ethic and determination. Moving up to second in the nation with a 7.50m jump is an incredible achievement, and earing National Athlete of the Week honors is well deserved."
"He is setting the bar high for himself and for our entire program," said Head Coach Cristy Snellgroves.
At this time, Lake-Sumter is one of the first Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) athletic programs to sponsor track & field. Due to less competition at the junior college level, Fyffe and the Lakehawks have the unique opportunity to compete against some of the country's top competition from all levels of the NCAA and NAIA.
Lake-Sumter Track & Field will be back on the track this Saturday, Apr. 12 at the Orlando Health – National Training Center Track in Clermont, Fla. for the PURE Athletics Sprint Elite Meet.
